Evermotion Challenge 2017 Winners Announcement!

Michal Franczak 2018-01-23 10:46 article  > All

Check out the winners of "The Perfect Getaway" challenge!

Our judges have chosen the best works - three main prizes and three awards.

Our jury:

  • Robert Filipowicz - Evermotion artist that stand behind the most acclaimed 3d scenes made for various rendering engines, from V-Ray to Unreal Engine.
  • Andrew Augustyniak - senior Evermotion artist with proficency with wide array of software - from 3ds Max, Maya, blender, Unreal engine, to Zbrush. Lead art director behind Archinteriors for Unreal vol. 4.
  • Anna Dąbrowska - senior Evermotion artist, one of lead modelers of foliage and vegetation for our collections,

The method of voting:

Voting wasn't easy, our jury had to spent quite a long time to evaluate final winners. At first, each member of jury picked their 10 favourites, then they chose the best from the best. They evaluated 3 main prizes, 3 awards and 4 honorable mentions. All works were evaluated in four categories: lighting, originality, composition and technical quality.

After counting all points the results are finally here!

1st place - ME_nesperos_27 - Link to Challenge 2017 Page

nr_00771_1_PerfectGetaway_FINAL_DUSK2

Robert Filipowicz: Simply beautiful! Great attention to details. Outstanding mood and good composition made this image my favorite.

Andrew Augustyniak: I really like the composition and overall quality. Many other works also have dense forests, but this one stands out - it's a must to see close-ups to fully appreciate all the little details and amount of work put in the image.

Ania Dąbrowska: I love the quality of the forest on the hills. Very pleasant image palette. there is also a good level of photorealism and nice details: the bridge among peaks.

ME_nesperos_27 will receive prizes:

  • 1000 euro from Evermotion
  • 5 Evermotion collections (worth €600)

Robert Filipowicz: I'm really impressed by the idea of this image. I love attention to details and I appreciate the amount of work put in this picture. Awesome lightning and color balance. One disadvantage of this image are missing plane divisions.

Andrew Augustyniak: Extraordinary attention to details - very nice composition and the best sculpts in whole contest. Also one of the fully 3d  works. The only thing I would improve would be to  leave more space in some areas.

Ania Dąbrowska: This work has an interesting story. Rich and fantastic scenery makes me fill like an explorer taking part in amazing adventure.

nhanle will recieve prizes:

  • €750 in cash from Evermotion

nr_00773_3_home_trailer_main_Hd3

Robert Filipowicz: Technically very good work and one of the best quality renders of all participants. Lighting and shaders did the job which makes this image very photorealistic. Good job.

Andrew Augustyniak: My pick for the first place. One of the most photorealistic images in whole contest - you need to look for a while to notice it's not a photo. I'm loving almost all of the shaders and foliage.

Ania Dąbrowska: Very natural scene with many details. All objects really fit in the scene. Great photorealism!

 annkos1980 will receive prizes:

  • €500 in cash from Evermotion
  • 5 Evermotion collections of winner's choice
  • Corona  Renderer license for 6 months -  149.94 Euro

1st award - ngocdo - Link to Challenge 2017 Page

nr_00764_4_FINAL_180115

Robert Filipowicz: Here I can see something more than a simply exterior visualization. I like the stylization of the image and pretty good composition. Plus for the fresh idea.

Andrew Augustyniak: Although this one wasn't my pick, I am not surprised that it's among final works - it tells an interesting story and stands out in terms of originality.

Ania Dąbrowska: Interesting story that suits "Perfect Getaway" theme. I really like that this work is full of interesting objects.

ngocdo will receive:

  • TopoGun licence
  • Evermotion collection
  • Book: 3D Photorealistic Rendering: Interiors & Exteriors with V-Ray and 3ds Max by Jamie Cardoso

2nd award - gregor000 - Link to Challenge 2017 Page

nr_00765_5_Perfect_Gataway

Robert Filipowicz: I really like this work from for its first person view - it is simply but great looking. Well made canoe and mountains adds a lot of realism into this scene. I fall in love with the mood and lightning.

Andrew Augustyniak: Another photorealistic one - great mood and composition. Not much to criticize - one of more minimalistic scenes in the contest.

gregor000 will receive:

  • TopoGun licence
  • Evermotion collection
  • Book: 3D Photorealistic Rendering: Interiors & Exteriors with V-Ray and 3ds Max by Jamie Cardoso

3rd award - amerfarah - Link to Challenge 2017 Page

nr_00766_6_MIdlle_18

Robert Filipowicz: Definitely different than others. Great piece of 3D art with awesome postproduction. Big plus for lightning and composition.

Andrew Augustyniak: Most stylized work in the contest. I really like the sculpted details and overall quality. Compositions tells an interesting story. I would give more point if not for the amount of 2d overpaint - I prefer raw 3d.

Ania Dąbrowska: Faboulus scene! I like these nice, stylized rocks / cliffs and a temple.

amerfarah will receive:

  • TopoGun licence
  • Evermotion collection
  • Book: 3D Photorealistic Rendering: Interiors & Exteriors with V-Ray and 3ds Max by Jamie Cardoso

Honorable mentions:

Neb - Link to Challenge 2017 Page

nr_00767_7_Neb_FrozenInTime

Robert Filipowicz: Really technical approach to photography which you used in 3D. Well done.

Andrew Augustyniak: Really nice looking work - lighting and composition are great. Also all shaders and models a top-noch.

Thinkyogurt - Link to Challenge Page

nr_00768_8_ThePerfectGatewayContest_TheExitStrategy

Robert Filipowicz: Great idea man! I sincerely regret that you put onto the image those bad looking filters and newspaper. Unfortunately it is big disadvantage.

Andrew Augustyniak: One of my favorites - very funny idea and good overall quality. If not for white paper frame and covering much of it with an old camera filter it could be one of the finalist.

Anna Dąbrowska: This is one of my favorities because it's witty, well done and has a great story.

jwilliams - Link to Challenge 2017 Page

nr_00774_Untitled

Robert Filipowicz: This work deserves to be honored. Outstanding level of photorealism. You have great skills and your work could be in top 6 but unfortunately the top of the boat in the final image isn't a fully 3D model.

Capellan - Link to Challenge 2017 Page

nr_00769_9_BUXA_sib_View01_PP_2

Robert Filipowicz: I added this work to the mentions because of great atmosphere. I also like the texturing of the car and overall idea. I think author tried to tell a story with this picture and i buy it! :)

Andrew Augustyniak: I really like overall mood of the scene. Also composition and lighting is really nice.

skom8 - Link to Challenge Page

nr_00777_Untitled

Andrew Augustyniak: One of the hidden gems - the story and mood are great. I really like overall colors and composition.

KorolV - Link to the Challenge Page

nr_00778_Untitled

Andrew Augustyniak: Another photorealistic one - I really like the lighting and shaders. If it wasn't so heavily based on a photo I'm sure it would be more appreciated.

Rashed N Abdullah - Link to the Challenge Page

nr_00780_Final_8_Logo

Andrew Augustyniak: One of more complicated works in the contest - a lot of great models and textures. Unfortunately amount of details makes it difficult to focus.

Hi, i was just wondering about the winners, because this is not the first time that this is happening. Why are all the winners famous 3D artists? even some honorable works( brick visual?)))...yes, winners' works are the best, but is it fair to others? We already know that they're among the bests, so why don't you take into account giving awards to not famous artists?
dr_After 13:34:12  |  24-01-2018
@tigranarchi - Being known was not a factor of a rating at all. Jury debated for a long time and discussion was only about quality and the amount of work involved with making all Challenge images.
tigranarchi 13:45:45  |  24-01-2018
as i told, winner works are really amazing, but i asked another thing, why after all you don't consider and realise that they are famouse artists and do you really think they need that prizes??)) may be to give a chanse to new artists? without any contest it is clear that first 3 artist among the best..;))
CarmenSer 13:52:47  |  24-01-2018
What happened to the jury this year? Only 3 peps? Previous years were more different artists. In my opinion some of the comments to honourable mentions were not fair.
inulllo 14:02:35  |  24-01-2018
Totally dissapointed from some of the evermotion judges expertise in 3d!
mozoner 16:03:34  |  24-01-2018
my fav. one was thinkyogurt,, that's really good idea and tecknick. I think using frame is less important than just using same kind of tree and water
ali_evermot 16:07:14  |  24-01-2018
My only hope for a fair judgement was Evermotion, but this one also finished.
inulllo 19:12:25  |  24-01-2018
Now out of respect to all the people that took time to participate Dear jury pleas just elaborate on that part with 3rd place( not even mentioning the first place) .. You state that ""All works were evaluated in four categories: lighting, originality, composition and technical quality."""!! 1.Orignality.How creative and original is to make a 3d copy of real photo that someone else took.Creative somehow how? 2.Composition mimikcing someone else composition again ? 3.Technical quality. Now I do undrestand that poeple have different perception of reality but please this image and high level shadres ?you must be joking. 4.Lightening is ok but anything special worth mentioning? and then I read the comment from you jury Andrew Augustyniak: My pick for the first place? I wish it was so ...noone would ever come to follow your Evermotion website With not means to disrespect the authors of any of the images and with the clear understanding the part with being subjective is always a case in the contest I honestly think that here you have disrecpected all the participants with poor judgement and that is not good for the image of Evermotion...
Annamariabalog 20:13:04  |  24-01-2018
As I read through the comments here I could totally agree with some of them. I find it not fair how the images were judged this time. "Originality": thats absolute not original to copy someone else's photo. there is nothing original in it, even if the original photo looks better than the image :) Then it comes that the jury awarded not the artist, but the photographer who took that nice photo.
Jakester 21:05:44  |  24-01-2018
I didn't participate in the challenge but been following the work people have created for this years challenge.. and I gotta say, I'm a little confused on how you guys judge this challenge. With all respect to the artists you have voted winners, I agree on the comment that mimicking a photography isn't that creative. Also in the into for this challenge you guys said you wanted a picture with a story.. I don't see how the 1st place or some of the honorable mentions have a story.. some are just architectural visualizations. This challenges had so many great submissions in terms of story and many were also technically impressive. For the 2nd place, you wrote in the rules, that during the challenge it wasn't allowed to post your work on any other site online until it was over.. the 2nd place winners image has been all over the internet ever since December. On behance, artstation and YouTube .. now I love the image! It is abseloutly amazing.. but if you are making rules for the challenge then stick to them when you vote, otherwise why bother making any rules. I don't want the 2nd place winner to loose his win. But I do feel like you should stick to your own rules when you judge. Just to play it fair.
sipos 23:12:44  |  24-01-2018
I have to agree with most of the comments, because I also don't understand why 2 featured images are copies of someones pictures. In one of the honorable mentions descriptions Andrew wrote 'If it wasn't so heavily based on a photo I'm sure it would be more appreciated', but it doesn't seem to be a problem for the 3rd place work. This lack of consistency is at least weird. It also shows, that working on cool concept is total wast of time, when you can just find a nice picture, and recreate it in 3dmax (which is way easier in my opinion, than creating something from scratch). Also like someone mentioned before, 2nd place work was everywhere already. It's an awesome image, and I really think it deserves this prize, but you created this rule for some reason
paveluniversal 00:17:01  |  25-01-2018
I remember have reading in the rules before to start to work my entry that during the challenge it wasn't allowed to post the work on any other site online until it was over. But now i'm trying to find that line in the rules and is gone!... What is happening here?...
andrej_dj 00:28:03  |  25-01-2018
At first, Evermotion asked for unleashing imagination and scene that tells a story, and in demands, the brilliance of an idea was equal to technical quality. At the end, we are reading about criterias like: " lighting, originality, composition and technical quality", and the "amount of work involved". Please, next time be consistent from start to the end - if you want scenes with as many elements as possible, or you are planning to appreciate archiviz+bike or boat or a 3D copy of some reference picture more than original attempt to answer to the challenge - just say it right at the beginning. Because you wasted some people's time and efforts.
dr_After 08:06:16  |  25-01-2018
As it is stated in the text abover, jury made their decisions basing on lighting, originality, composition and technical quality. It means ALL FOUR factors were in the table and they could assign points on each of them, then they summed it and make the final decisions. Sometimes works had really similar score, but we cannot help that we can only give 3 main prizes and 3 awards. These were not light decisions and I am fully aware that not everybody is happy. We will think about improvement next year, I will take your suggestions into account, probably some voting factor from users can be also included into final score in the next edition. As for the publication of works outside from this site: it was a restriction that was initially in the rules, but after many emails with requests from users we decided to allow publishing outside, knowing how hard is for some of participants to keep their works out of public sight. We believe that it was made with the favor for the users, not against them. And it had NO impact on jury's voting. We only assured that works were made during contest not before it started. If you have proof that it wasn't the case, let us know, we will disqualify such work immediately.
Jakester 08:39:00  |  25-01-2018
... so you changed the rules because people that didn't want to follow the rules, asked you to..that is a load of bs. How about this, if people don't want to follow the rules, they don't win. And those rules had to be changed right up until the end, I remember reading the rules not long before the contest was over. It seems more like you changed the rules because you really liked the 2nd place entry. And don't get me wrong, I think it is a great image. but be fair. And next time, remember what you asked for when you vote.
Nakich 08:44:27  |  25-01-2018
Why is this? why? but why? wtf, why?
dr_After 09:28:12  |  25-01-2018
No, we believed that this restriction is no longer necesarry, it was copy-pasted from earlier editions and after all feedback we received we saw that it stands in a way for artists. It wasn't changed for any other reason than people wanting it to change. We don't run this site alone, we want to listen. And we listen carefully now, even when we hear harsh words. To be clear: I was not a part of jury and jury is not managing this site so the decision about removing this restriction was independent from their judgement.
Jakester 10:13:36  |  25-01-2018
Well that we can understand. And thanks for letting us know. And again, I didn't participate, so I am not making these comments because I am angry or holding a grudge for not winning. I am simply looking at this from the outside and what I notice it's just an unfair treatment of the people Who did participate. Im glad you answered to the comment on changing the rules. But it's your consistency in this challenge that you really need to work on for the next challenge. If you ask people to unleash their imagination and tell a story.. don't pick a copy of a photo. It's like asking people to make a blue image and then pick a red image as the winner. The winners images are awesome and look amazing. No doubt. People are just pissed cause the inconsistency wasted their time. So change that next time!
annkos1980 12:19:53  |  25-01-2018
Hi Guys! First of all thanks a lot evermotion for the 3rd place and congrats to the other winners but mainly to everyone that participate in the competition! Since my work gets criticized in a non respectful way i would like to say a couple of things..i am doing visualizations about 20 years now and i have get almost every kind of award out there and also a lot of winning positions in competitions.. before i get to that level i lost in some other competitions that i really felt like you feel right now so i really understand your position and respect it because being an artist is exactly that..trying your best everyday to improve yourself and get the appreciation from other artists, web sites like evermotion or competitions etc...but also what is very important before you get to that level is to show respect as you like to get respect and not only give respect to other artists but give respect to evermotion guys that have done so many goods so 3d artists, move forward and become better and better during all those years...some of my works that i post in the forum all those years i felt that could be in the front page (editors choice) and when i see that it wasn't there i didn't start complain them but i try to become better and guess what, my next project pick the editors choice award.. About my work in the competition now even if i didn't get any winning position, the feedback i am getting through the web is the real prize since i am getting appreciation from the best artists out there who a lot believe i had could take the 1st place - something i dont believe personally since i really like the first 2 winners work as i like also a lot of other works that maybe i would choose instead of my work but come to judges position that they had to choose between so nice works...so all in all please dont feel that you waste your time, you enjoy the process and you become better through that process..share your work to the social and take the appreciation you deserve, become better for the next competition but always show your respect to the other people and 3d artists efforts! Thanks again and congratulations to everyone for their effort! Ps: Last thing about famous artists won the prizes...thanks but i dont thing i am famous and secondly even if i was, its like you ban Messi and Ronaldo from the Spanish championship because they are too good..that sounds fair to you?
Jakester 12:54:17  |  25-01-2018
Annkos1980. First off congrats. From reading people's comments, they aren't angry that they didn't win. In fact I'm pretty sure they would gladly vote for other artists to win than themselves. People are frustrated that evermotion didn't seem to stick to what they asked for when launching the challenge :) they asked people to unleash their imagination and wanted a picture that told a story. The technical aspect was always a part of it:)
kanuck 17:43:21  |  25-01-2018
@annkos1980 in this case I think you are being unrespectful to an author of the photo, by copying his image, composition, design, and idea without even giving him a credit! Jury totally messed up here, especially when they commented on one of the works that is too heavily based on the photo, but with yours they are totally fine. What is going on here?! I don't even want to comment changing the rules during the competition, without letting know to all participants. You guys made so many things wrong..
annkos1980 20:24:42  |  25-01-2018
Jakester: Thanks! In the description the didnt mention only about unleash your creativity and imagination in one way but with different ways..they mention that can be an interior etc or anything reminds you your younger age...for me my younger years were mainly in campings and thats why i use that kind of reference to support by adding also some story with the title of my work and the woman with the kids...so yes pretty much some of them they are angry just because they didnt win something that is healthy reaction and the only way to become better if you want my opinion. As i said already i love so many works here that probably i would choose some of them instead of my work Kanuck: i guess you are new to visualitation since its very common to try transfer succesfully a photo to 3d rendering, that is something really challenging and difficult with the right way..also i guess you didnt see my other renders from the same scene since i didnt stick only to the main render and i gave my style also..about the photo itself is part of the book that i gave clear credit so before you post something like that please see the whole story first...anyway i will not say anything else to that matter, anyone who want to see whats the point of the competitions and become better, he can read my preview long post.
kanuck 21:47:29  |  25-01-2018
@annkos1980 you guess wrong. It is very common to transfer photo into a 3d image, but mostly as a beginner exercise. when you know something more about rendering, it's not really a big challenge. Also using someones idea for a creative competition is at least weird. I will write it again, even jury commented on one of the works, that is too heavily based on the photo, but with yours they are totally fine, which is the biggest bs of this competition imo. Weird double standards. I saw your different renders, but we discuss about the one that won the 3rd prize. I didn't participate in this competition, but I exactly know why people are pissed, and believe me it's not because they lost, it's because judges really did shi**y job this year (among others, by giving you a prize). Read comments from previews years, all are favorable and full of congrats. This year not even one is fully positive

One more thing that really need to be mentioned regarding that contest. That is especially important to young atists that practise as 3d arch vis or similar. That is regarding the honorable mention of the brick visual artist who used red bull photo. He used it as a center of his composition. This is dynamic photo of person with a bike that has so much story caught by the photographer in that moment....and it is just transferred to his work as the main element of his story ......That is unacceptable especially in competition..You should have some respect for your creative process and other peoples work ....you do understand there is a certain limit and common sense when doing that ,,,,,Otherwise even in the rules it states: You can use pre-made models. You can also use licensed models and textures made by other artists / companies, but you must give proper credit for every author / company of each asset you use. that photo is not a pre-made model niether a texture? ...

WOW! So glad I didn't bother wasting my time on this. How "Thinkyogurt" didn't win is beyond me. It's the only inspiring thing here.
