Create Realistic Grass in Blender 2.8 in 15 minutes

CG Geek 2019-02-22 10:55 tutorial  > Blender  > modeling

CG Geek shows his process of creating realistic grass in real-time with Blender 2.8 Eevee.

Create and render realistic grass in real-time with Blender 2.8 Eevee. You can create all assets yourself or buy some ready packs from BlenderMarket.

First, we enable "Import images as planes" and "Node Wrangler" add-ons (included in Blender). You can download foliage textures from CC0 Textures site.

We import image as plane and cut it, so it contains only one straw of grass. Then we can set up material - with Principled Shader and mask bitmap included with foliage texture set we can use alpha blend mode and translucency to get 2D grass straw with cut-out background. Then we can import the rest of maps (roughness and normal maps). We can alter color of grass with Hue / saturation node. With"Object Info" node we can use random color for our straws. After creating a patch with 12 straws or so, we can use them as a particle system for sculpted surface.
