Global Flaming

The fires in Australia have been devastating so far. I wanted to bring awareness to the current situation in Australia and depict potential consequences that we might bear if the bushfire crisis escalates further and further. How much of Australia has to burn, how many lives have to be lost, homes destroyed before people resolve to act on climate change? Rather than imagining what post-apocalyptic Australia would look like 100-300 years from now, I decided to capture a more imminent future that we might witness during our lifetime. We might, if we don't treat the climate catastrophes seriously and take action while we still can. I wanted my work to be something that people would look at and be encouraged to prevent that future from happening. __ Process. I have always liked the Blade Runner 2049 aesthetic, especially the orange scenes in Las Vegas, they looked so unique to and expressive. The movie itself was an absolute visual treat. Upon further research, I found out that the concept art for those scenes was actually based on Sydney's 2009 dust storm. That, and recent photos capturing Australian bushfires, served as an inspiration and a base for my work. I wanted to implement matte-painting techniques this time, so I used 3d render as a base, and painted in all sorts of photos that I found online in such a way that it looked believable and felt real. The 3d base had to be quite good, so I used high-quality 3d assets of rocks and vegetation from Evermotion, Quixel Megascans, 3dsky, and Turbosquid. I made most textures myself. Overall, I had a lot of fun working on this project, learnt a few new techniques and skills. Thank you the Evermotion team for this opportunity!
