Building Nature in 3D: How Scanned Trees Bring Realism

The Challenge

In 3D visualization, games, and VFX, authentically capturing nature has always been a major challenge. Traditional modeling methods couldn’t replicate the unique complexity of real plants.

Capturing Nature with Precision

We set out to create a collection of 30 photorealistic 3D models of popular European tree species using advanced photogrammetry technology.

We  built a custom botanical scanning rig in our studio. The device features a circular LED lighting with camera and a minimal-contact mounting system that preserves natural leaf positions. This way we have real world input to process further.

Each tree features a LOD system. High Poly LOD offers full resolution (500k-2M polygons) for cinematic renders and close-ups, while Medium Poly LOD   provides optimized quality for mid-range and background shots. Low Poly LOD is heavily optimized at just 5-10k polygons, designed specifically for real-time games requiring hundreds of trees to render simultaneously. There is also a Very Low Poly version for best optimization possible.

The result is a library of 30 photorealistic tree models exported in universal formats (FBX, OBJ, USD), compatible with industry-standard tools. The models serve professionals across architecture, game development, film and VFX, VR/AR, and education.

Innovation Rooted in Nature

Our investment in scanning technology has opened the path to expanding our library. The European Trees 3D project proves that combining advanced technology with deep understanding of nature creates digital resources serving professionals worldwide—digital archives preserving nature’s beauty for artists, developers, and visionaries building virtual worlds.
