The Challenge
The goal of the project was to create a realistic, atmospheric post-apocalyptic environment that combined the authenticity of real-world destruction with full artistic control and technical efficiency in Unreal Engine 5. Achieving this balance required a workflow capable of preserving fine material details while maintaining flexibility in composition, lighting and performance.
Hybrid Approach
To reach the desired level of realism, we adopted a hybrid workflow that merged traditional 3D modeling with photogrammetry-based scanned assets. Real fragments of destroyed structures-such as car wrecks, worn tires, concrete rubble, and vegetation-were digitized to capture authentic textures, deformations, and imperfections impossible to reproduce manually. These elements brought a natural sense of decay and material truth to the scene.

Traditional Models
Alongside scanned assets, we incorporated hand-modeled elements from our internal library, including buildings, trees, and urban infrastructure. These assets ensured clean geometry, consistent style, and optimization for real-time rendering. Their use allowed for precise artistic direction and scene composition.

Result
The combination of both methods resulted in a highly realistic yet efficient environment. The final scene conveys the haunting atmosphere of an abandoned city slowly overtaken by nature — a balance of realism, emotion, and technical precision.
