My last personnal project... CASA DE ̶P̶A̶P̶E̶L̶ CRISTAL: A MANIFESTO OF TRANSLUCENCY BY ATELIER MYST 3DS MAX, CORONA, PHOTOSHOP, NO AI An Architectural Enigma in the Heart of Shimane Deep within the dense, mist-shrouded forests of Shimane Prefecture, near Matsue, architect Romain Brunas, founder of Atelier Myst, has erected a structure that seems to suspend time. The Casa de ̶P̶a̶p̶e̶l̶ Cristal does not merely occupy a site; it engages in a dialogue with the invisible, redefining the boundary between human sanctuary and the Japanese wilderness. This project is a radical exploration of matter, where traditional opacity yields to a luminous diffraction orchestrated with surgical precision. The Crystal Skin: Beyond the Shōji While contemporary architecture has long indulged in the total transparency of clear glass, Atelier Myst takes a stand against this "spatial voyeurism." The central concept is rooted in active translucency. The envelope is not crafted from paper, but from acid-etched structural glass, treated to achieve an incredibly fine grain. The Andon Effect: At night, the building morphs into a monumental Andon (traditional lantern), radiating a spectral glow that interacts with the silhouettes of ancient pines. Photonic Serenity: This opalescent glass captures diffused light to eliminate harsh shadows within the interior, creating an environment where light becomes a physical, almost palpable presence. Reinterpreting the Shadow: The project draws direct inspiration from Jun'ichirō Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows, yet transposes it into a technological modernity where glass replaces the fragility of paper. Kinetics and Spatial Intelligence: Heliotropic Furniture The interior of the residence is anything but static. The primary innovation lies in its dynamic living area, a feat of magnetic engineering. Magnetic Choreography: Beneath a quartz-finished polished concrete screed lies a complex network of electromagnets. The seating modules, mounted on magnetized bases, move autonomously or via remote control. Heliotropic AI: Controlled by artificial intelligence, the furniture can follow the sun's trajectory or reconfigure itself based on the inhabitant’s needs, transforming the living space into a shifting, organic structure. Visual and Technical Silence The aesthetic of the Casa de ̶P̶a̶p̶e̶l̶ Cristal is one of radical minimalism, where every technical detail is concealed to serve the sensory experience. Invisible Structure: A high-yield strength steel exoskeleton allows the corners to be free of any columns, offering infinite vanishing lines and reinforcing the impression that the roof floats above the forest. Thermal Immersion: Despite its ethereal appearance, the structure ensures optimal thermal inertia thanks to a central seismic-resistant cast-in-place concrete core and a high-performance geothermal system. Detailed Technical Specifications The project is a synthesis of vernacular concepts and cutting-edge technology: Glass Envelope: Extra-white laminated glass panels, acid-etched on both sides, providing total privacy while maximizing light diffraction. Lighting System: Addressable RGB LED matrix integrated into the glazing beads, allowing the chromatic atmosphere of the building to be modulated according to the seasons or the time of day. Resilience to Elements: The treated glass ensures total durability against the heavy rainfall of the Shimane region, where traditional paper would have perished. About the Author: Hanae Kurosawa is an architecture critic based in Kyoto. She studies how glass, a material essentially defined by its invisibility, here becomes a tactile and protective presence.
