Secret Garden Challenge 2016 David Valentin

This is my first entry ever in a challenge. I have a background in architectural rendering. I would love to combine my passion for creating architectural renderings with something fantasy based. For this contest, I will attempt to create a garden within an extension of a bedroom. Attached is my initial quick sketch. I envisioned the room lit by Moonlight on the left. On the right side, I want the garden lit with lanterns. I will be working mostly with Maya, VRay, Zbrush and Photoshop for post work. 173719 After testing several sketched ideas, I decided to go with a darker theme. I thought it would be interesting to show a bright secret garden alongside a grim desolate space that still showed elements of interest. To showcase the contrast, I decided to have sunlight permeate through the trees and create a soft glow on the ground. 174620 Modeling The room and its elements were created using box modeling. The plane for the garden area was covered with Vray Grass. A seamless grass texture was used on the ground then Vray Grass was applied to it. Various larger clumps of Vray grass was added to give the ground more variation. I found some ornate moldings and medallions on www.dikart.ru. They were all free directy from the website. The bed was fairly simple to create. I got the idea from the Modern Line at Restoration Hardware. The Restoration Hardware site includes some very detailed images with all the measurements you need to create most of their furniture from scratch. The draping was created using simple planes laid across the top of the bedframe and using ncloth. The bedding and pillows were created using Ncloth. A great tutorial can be found on youtube “MAYA 3D Modeling Tutorial – Bed with Pillow and sheet using NCloth by MBC. The trees were found on the autodesk website under Maya Resources and Tools – Vegetation. I modified the tree trunk within ZBrush to create a more realistic bark. I found various free plants from www.xfrog.com You can occasionally find several samples to download and modify them to your liking. I modified textures to create various plants and scaled the flowers as needed. The following are several elements I created. 174623174624174625 Diffuse Layer showing textures used. 176943 Attached is a light test. Im still tweaking the textures and light. Need to make sure there are no blown out areas in the final render. I will be rendering an HD version soon. 175464
