Help! Strange behaviour with translucent mat

Morning. I have an acrylic product to be rendered on a metallic surface. When the acrylic object is on a white surface all appears normally, yet when I use a metallic mat for the surface some areas within the acrylic model are dark. Please see the examples below ... that will make more sense than I can with words! V-Ray mats and renderer. Any help hugely appreciated! 122585122586
