No, it’s not spam or a one-off sordid post but a JKvisuals internal study on this interesting house by nifty Japanese architect, Shigeru Ban. He designed this private dwelling in 2000 for a family who wanted a house that, in the words of the client, “provides the least privacy so that the family members are not secluded from one another, a house that gives everyone the freedom to have individual activities in a shared atmosphere, in the middle of a unified family”. There are no conventional rooms, the only personal areas being the giant movable bedrooms which can be wheeled anywhere in the house including outside. Curtains separate the kitchen and storage areas and only the bathroom is screened off for privacy, and even that has external walls that open up to the outside. Because of the temperate climate, the house can be opened up for much of the year, allowing the two end elevations to be discreetly versatile. The walls are externally clad in clear corrugated plastic and sections of white acrylic are stretched internally across the timber frame which can be removed for cleaning. Insulation is through polythene foam stuffed into clear bags and fitted in between the two layers. The complementary nature of these combined materials is what gives the walls their translucency and allows diffused daylight to naturally light the whole house. The basic house was modelled in Sketchup for speed and then the environment was added, textured and lit in 3dsMax 2012 and rendered with vRay 2.0 with some minor post processing in Photoshop. This was a great downtime project for JKvisuals, allowing me to practice speed modelling, texturing, lighting and adding foliage with multiscatter.
