Sampan is self-initiated CGI project. This is a visual story about relation between earth, water and atmosphere. The whole composition works with contrast – air versus dense details. All the elements were done in pure 3D, even atmosphere and lens effects were rendered using VRay. After the render was ready I took it at post-production stage, were I did some color correction and retouch in Photoshop. About Trees: The big tree has about 400 000 leaves, the smaller one near 300 000. Every leave is a separate object generated at render time and shown as fast preview before it. Leaves have a complex material, including several types of variation in reflectivity and color. The final result was reached with procedural process of growing leaves on modeled tree branches. Good thing that it was still easy on RAM and fast to render (leaves generate at rendering, not showing in viewport). And with full control over leaves inside 3ds Max (without additional software like SpeedTree). Please, watch the video below. It shows my own tree-creation workflow, that I developed during this project.
Software: 3ds Max, Vray, PS
