El Go se originó en China hace más de 2.500 años y aunque no se sabe con exactitud cuando fue inventado, hacia el 300 a. C. era ya un pasatiempo popular, como viene indicado en una referencia al juego en los Analectas de Confucio. Restos arqueológicos muestran que este antiguo juego se jugaba en un tablero de una cuadrícula de 17×17, pero en la época en la que el juego ya había llegado a Corea y Japón, sobre el Siglo VII, los tableros habituales eran ya de 19×19.
