Hair & fur grass shadow issue

Have been rendering my external scene with hair and fur for grass in 3ds max 2017 but it is doing something super strange when it comes close to my front fence geometry. There is a strip where it gets lighter and will not get shadows and I cannot for the life of my figure out what is going wrong. Its almost like a reverse shadow except it doesn't even work with the lighting in my scene as the mr sun is in front of the fence. It will also do it if a plant cuts through the grass geometry so I removed the plant and stopped the grass short of my front fence but still no good. Any ideas?
