    The Golden loft - Concept

    Hi again,

As the competition consist only in one image, I decided to spent some time in sketches, composition and story. I called the golden loft because I am going to use a lot of golden details in the scene but then I also decided to use the gold as the main concept in different meanings.

First of all, the canvas is a golden rectangle. Using some golden proportions and my palette I started working in the concept.

Finally the story: This is a nice refurbished loft in the woods... it looks old and new at the same time. The owner is a rich criminal planning to attack the world... but our secret agent is here to save us again. So inspired in James Bond movie "Goldfinger" , I want to use two key characters in the scene focusing in golden intersections and then place some related activities in both sides.

    Whole Lotta Loft - Modeling

    Modeling the building this time...

For the "old factory" where the loft is placed I thought in something not too old. More like a warehouse in the forest with a mixing structure of concrete and steel. So I looked for references and then modeled the most characteristic parts:

Steel Structure and concrete waffle slab:

I tried to detail the models as possible focusing on my camera view because with nice models is easier to do materials look good.

See you in the next step!

The Golden loft - Light and Bckg

I want a dull light on my scene, because later I will add more artificials lights inside the loft to make a richest and interesting scene. I did some tests looking for a nice background that fits in the story. I used some images from Unsplash as I didn't want to put too much time modeling the exterior.

    Some tests...

    The Golden loft - Materials

The idea is to get a nice refurbished loft, so I wanted good materials showing the passage of time. This means that I used dirty and grunge materials with a new paint coat.
I have painted displacement textures for the concrete walls and used procedural noise for the displacement in the slab so I got the destroyed wall but again with a new paint coat.

I have also used displacement in the floor but only in some parts, just to simulate that an old wall was removed during the refurbishment process.

They are only about 4 - 5 important materials in which I put more work. Here the concrete and the Steel material.

Most of the textures I picked from textures.com but for the blending masks I have used some good "grunge" free stuff by Adán Martín.

    The Golden loft - Furniture

I have collected a lots of references for the furniture and props. I have modeled the main one, some of them from Gallotti and Radice, but I needed to model them from scratch as the provided models from the company are really basic.

I also like to pick the free models directly from the furniture companies when It is possible and then just put more work on them. I usually use the beautiful lamps from Marset , furniture from B&B Italia , beds from Flou.it, chairs from Fritzhansen and more furniture from Poltrona Frau.

At last but not least, a few models from Evermotion Archmodels and some free props from Dimensiva.

Of course, everything follow my composition as you can see in the previous schema.

And finally some Fun! Following my story I needed a big prop for the foreground, so I designed and modeled a bomb!

I used a Rack Case from Archmodels which I filled with the bomb. Could our agent deactivate it in time?

The Golden loft - Time to Render

I am a Vray user. Although I have tried more render engines I really like the versatility of Vray and it is what we are using in A2Studio everyday... so go for it!

No too much to say... 4K res, I used Linear Workflow and saved the output in .EXR 32 bits, IM + LC as I didn't have time to go for BF + LC in the GI, high minimum samples in the antialiasing as I was looking for nice details in displacement and all the rest of detailed parts, lots of tests to get clean glossy effects and lighting. I have also played with Lens Effects from Vray for this scene to get some nice effects in all the lights I have used.

Here is the Raw Render I got from Vray!

The Golden loft - Postprocessing 01

As I told you before, my output was a linear EXR so I started postprocessing in After Effects:
